Lee Precision Production Smelting Pot

Used in Projects:
- Bismuth Skulls
- Bismuth Earth
We became obsessed with a material called Bismuth, which we first discovered at a craft fair a few years back. It was only when we experimented with it that we discovered just how cool this material is.
Because Bismuth has a low melting point the Lee Precision Melting Pot works perfectly to melt and then pour the metal into our molds to form many different objects. One of which is our Bismuth Skulls(see gallery below).
We produce our molds by first 3d printing the design, then using the print to form a silicone mold around it which we will then use to pour in the melted Bismuth to form our final product. But the magic happens when we pour out the Bismuth before it hardens to reveal an amazing formation of geometric shapes that the metal leaves behind. It’s incredible to see.
The examples of what you can do with Bismuth are endless. Forming designs like we do or just pouring them into precast shapes will allow you to make some amazing things.
One of the other major benefits of the smelting pot is that you do not have to handle or hand-pour the melted bismuth. All you need to do is get it to the correct temperature and then pour it out the spout from the bottom of the unit. When you are done pouring you just need to close the spout and then leave the remaining metal in the container to cool down for another day.
The Lee Precision smelting pot will reach a max temp of 900 degrees. This means that you are limited to only a few metals like Bismuth and lead. If you want to melt silver and gold you will be looking for a much more substantial furnace, which also means more of an investment of course. But at around $100 you really can’t go wrong with this smaller table-top melting machine. Especially if you only want to do projects on a smaller scale.
