Bismuth Project Molds

Bismuth Projects

Here is another edition of our currently “in progress” projects. A selection of Bismuth molds poured projects that form into one-of-a-kind geometric shapes. And you all know how much we love geometric designs.

Altered States Bismuth Projects

Our mission here is to create a few unique designs and use our 3D printer to print them out to construct a silicone mold. This would then make it possible to pour in the melted bismuth before quickly pouring it out so that the metal has enough time to form around the edges of the mold, but yet still be liquid enough in the middle to form those cool-looking geo formations when we pour out the remaining bismuth. Hope that makes sense?

So we decided to start with an alien skull and the planet Earth, which we will only print half of the planet to use as the bismuth base. From here, we will go on to possibly print much bigger molds, but we will leave that until we get pretty comfortable with the smaller projects.

The bismuth itself is available on eBay and pretty easy to get. Our shopping list of other materials includes the liquid to form the molds, a thick spray primer to coat the 3D prints and fill in those annoying print layers; we will also grab some wet sanding paper to smooth off the primer once it is dried.

One thing we have learned about making molds from 3D prints is how important it is to clean it up after it’s finished printing. If you don’t do this step correctly, then you will see every single print layer in the final product, which is super frustrating. But, if the final product calls for some rough lines or texture on it, then it can pay off to not clean the print up after it’s done. So just something to think about when designing your product.

Bismuth is incredible to work with, and we are really looking forward to seeing what we can think up to do with it next. It’s also really handy to have our mini smelting machine to melt down the material and pour it out without having to get too close to the melted metal. Always a plus when we don’t burn ourselves, right lol!

Anyway, check out the gallery of bismuth projects below and keep coming back for more updates and pictures.
