The Dark State of the Moon – Stained Glass Project

Dark Side of the Moon Stained Glass

Can you guess who or what was the inspiration for this awesome stained glass project? Yup, none other than that legendary rock band, Pink Floyd… well, their album cover for Dark Side of the Moon, to be more specific.

For those of you who are not aware of what that album cover looks like, you can take a look at the original album cover in the gallery below. I’d highly recommend taking a listen to the album too because it’s something very special.

The Dark State of the Moon – Stained Glass Project

We wanted to recreate the album cover design using stained glass, and what better time than our first glasswork project outside of making our scopes. It’s always better to combine a couple of passions in the same project, we think.

Our first step was to make sure we had the right colored glass in order to achieve the final look as it stands on the cover art. So, as always, we sketched it out and made sure to label the colors on our design drawing (see the image below).

You will also notice in the planning drawing we had a debate about how to finish the end of the rainbow side of the design. Flat? Curved? Tapered? We eventually went with the more jagged look, which we really loved the look of as soon as we dry-fitted the glass into place. Once we had the two sides planned out, we all felt that the center of the triangle needed something more.

If you look at the real album cover, the center of the design is just a triangle with a white gradient that enters from the left side. This was another moment to pause and think about the best way to achieve that look. We tried to find a unique-looking section of our glass collection that would create the same feeling as on the album cover, but that was not too successful. Because this section of the design would be the focal point, we decided on using a slightly different colored glass and added a glass marble in the middle of that. This we felt would create a really cool look when the item was held up to the sunlight, and with the rainbow glass on the right side, it should pop even more.

This project was actually pretty easy to put together once we figured out all the placements and glass colors we would be using. And when we were done, the first thing we did was to take it outside and put it up against the sunlight to see how it looked. And let’s just say we were very happy with the final result, which you can see in the gallery of images below.

How did we do? Let us know in the comments below and feel free to ask as many questions as you want; we would be more than happy to help you out if we can.
